OUKITEL WP2 the ruggedized with more battery on the market

It is a common quality of practically all OUKITEL phones. With the intention of obtaining a common hallmark of the firm, it provides its smartphones with very generous batteries that always attract attention. THE WP2 is no exception, nothing is further from reality, we are talking about a smartphone with nothing less than 10.000 mAh battery, one pass.

But as good as it is to have a huge battery, this is neither the only thing nor the best thing about this OUKITEL WP2. We are facing a rugerizado with which OUKITEL has put all the meat on the grill so that it is able to compete with many other smartphones with more name without complexes. 

An 6 inch, dual photo camera, storage 4 GB RAM, 64GB storage, of course expandable, are reasons enough for us to look closely at this smartphone. That in addition to all this is submersible in water, resistant to dust and shocks. Do you need more reasons to be interested in this OUKITEL WP2?

This is the OUKITEL WP2

The physical aspect of the new OUKITEL WP2 is very much in line with the rest of the rugged ones that we can find in the market. Large size, angular shapes, some other metal sheet, and also presence of screws. All combined with a choice of bomb proof materials. We find Polystyrene Ebonite and Flexible Polystyrene Glue that not only protect it from water, but also from scratches and bumps. But let's see it in parts.

On the front, the large size of its 6-inch screen stands out, which occupies a large part of the front panel. Although it still retains the frames inside the glass part, in addition to the wide frames typical of the body of the device. At the bottom, just above the signature logo is the microphone. And at the top of the screen we find the sensors, the selfie camera and the speaker for calls.

To be able to charge or connect the OUKITEL WP2 we must remove a rubber tab which serves to keep the device hermetic. We must say that this tab can be easily removed. In other rugged smartphones that we have been able to test this simple task was more complicated than expected.

At the right side from WP2 we find some element, in our opinion, misplaced. At the top is the button for volume control. And just below the button lock or on / off. So far everything within normality. But once again we find an "experiment" that has already been amply demonstrated on other occasions that it is not successful. 

The OUKITEL WP2 locates your fingerprint reader on the side of the device, just below the "home" button. A place that is not comfortable at first on such a large smartphone, and if we add to this a fingerprint reading "imprecise", even worse. It is important that when recording the fingerprint we place the finger in the same position in which we will put it with the smartphone in hand.

At the left side, in addition to the screws that we also find on the right side, there is the card slot. We can insert a card up to two SIM cards, and a memory card micro SD. This slot, as with the USB port, is located protected with a rubber tab that guarantees protection to water.

La upper part the phone remains totally smooth. The decision of delete port headphone input mini jack, as more and more manufacturers do, it makes some parts free of buttons or ports.

At rear of the OUKITEL WP2 we find its dual camera in an upright position, one of the great attractions of this smartphone. The camera is placed on a metal sheet that differentiates it from the rest in a striking way.

Just below, we find a very original flash and little seen so far. It's about a Quadruple large LED flash capable of illuminating the most difficult scenes in the style of the flash of the most professional cameras. We have put it to the test and it really delivers better than expected results.

At the bottom of the rear is your single speaker. It does not stand out for being more powerful than the average, but it offers an acceptable sound with good power and without distortions.

OUKITEL WP2 Unboxing

This is one of our "sacred" moments when we receive a smarphone. In the unboxing of WP2 we find some expected absences and few surprises. We were getting used to seeing how lately we found some extra or accessory that we did not have. But nothing this time.

When opening the box we find in the foreground, as usual, the smartphone itself. That at first glance stands out for great, and once we took it out, by heavy. This is not a novelty, “ruged phones” are clunky and heavy phones, and the OUKITEL WP2 is no exception.

We have to say that the packaging is very good. A matte black box. And inside it other small boxes with the rest of the components. In one of them is the connector for charging in electric current. One point in favor is that this one comes in european format, something that although it seems logical is not always true.

And in another of the small boxes inside we find several cables. There is the USB cable as we know with connection for USB type C. We also have a adapter to connect headphones to the same USB C port, due to the absence of a 3.5 mm jack connector. And finally with a cable that will serve for the OUKITEL WP2 to act as an external battery for other devices.

Nothing more, but yeah something less, headphones. We never tire of saying that this should be a must-have accessory. And although we continue to insist on this, it seems that it is becoming a more common practice to do without them.

Big screen for a big smartphone

The OUKITEL WP2 comes equipped with a generous 6-inch screen. Something that fits well if we look at the size of the phone. We have already been able to test other ruggedized ones in which a screen size of 5 or 5,5 inches was quite small. In this case, the screen looks good on the device.

We have one IPS LCD capacitive screen with a very good resolution, 1080 x 2160 px, Full HD +. It has density of 402 pixels per inch and multi touch. And with something that we always like to find on a smartphone, the Notification LEDs.

However it is possible the protection of the screen could be one of its weak points. The OUKITEL WP2 is a smartphone that hit the market less than two months ago. Therefore, they have the protection Gorilla Glass 2 it does not make much sense if it is currently going for version 6. Even more so in the case of a smartphone that is situated in the so-called all-terrain sector.

We look inside the OUKITEL WP2

We are seeing how the mid-range is exceeded more and more. It's easy to find humble signature devices as powerful as any high-end. Smartphones that try to gain a foothold in a saturated market by offering high performance at a good price. OUKITEL has always sounded above other firms precisely because of this, and the WP2 is an example of that.

In the “all-terrain” segment of smartphones, it is not enough to offer good sealing. The OUKITEL WP2 is IP68 certified and with shock protection. But this is not enough to make it stand out. It must also be a competent smartphone in many other respects, and the WP2 presents several reasons to be taken into account.

‎ MediaTek MT6750 processor, a chip of eight cores running at 1,5 GHz amply contrasted and that has already offered good results in firms such as Oppo, Asus, ZTE or Ulephone. It keeps the device flowing reliably and without crashing performing any task or with any game. We will not miss power, and we will not notice overheating either.

For a good processor to be up to the task, it is important to have the support of a good RAM memory. The OUKITEL WP2 has 4 GB of RAM, which are perfectly complemented by a capacity of 64G internal storageB. More than enough numbers for this smartphone to work wonderfully, and we attest that it does.

And putting the link to a very decent hardware section we look at the GPU. We have been able to enjoy quality graphics by testing the WP2. And this thanks to the ARM Mali-T860MP2, a graph with ample experience capable of offering very good results.

Android 8.0 Oreo with some brushstroke

We have said it and repeated it infinitely many times, we like Android as it is. An ever-better operating system that works like a charm. And sometimes because of an uncomfortable layer of customization it suffers from slowdown. There are firms that "mold" Android into their own, and manage to offer an attractive product. A clear example is MIUI, Xiaomi's own layer.

On the OUKITEL WP2 we can't find clean Android. But we have to say in his favor, that the customization layer is minimally invasive. It doesn't go much beyond a few icons with metallic edges. We also found a "Tool case" with different applications that can be useful as a compass, level, and others to perform measurements.

As a paste we could add that within the menu, in certain factory applications we have found some settings that are in perfect Mandarin Chinese. Nothing important, but it does seem like a small translation error that will surely be able to correct in future updates.

Photography at the height of the rest

We arrived at the photographic section of the OUKITEL WP2. We have seen how in this section, all-terrain smartphones have evolved a lot, Fortunately. At first, this type of phone was conceived to be resistant to shocks and water. Focusing a large part of its main characteristics on tightness and resistance.

But like all sectors within the smartphone market, this one has also evolved. In addition to improving even more in the most identifying aspects, we see how manufacturers increasingly grant greater importance to aspects such as photography. Something that only adds to these special smartphones.

In this case, it is good news to see that OUKITEL has equipped the WP2 with a dual camera. In addition, to ensure satisfactory results they have bet on insurance. Thus we see how both the dual sensor of the rear camera, such as front camera sensor are signed by Samsung.

At rear camera we have a 16 megapixel isocell sensor, the Samsung S5K2P7. Offers us focal aperture 2.0 with ISO 100 - 1600. And it is complemented by a sensor 2 megapixel secondary. Together they form a dual camera capable of delivering great results.

En daytime photos in good light we see really good results. The color definition is at a very good level with a very realistic color gamut. And the definition of the shapesy textures it has nothing to envy of a good camera.

If we shoot a landscape, we also get good sharpness even on the farthest objects. Although a latent slight loss of quality when I enlarges the catch. Overall, the OUKITEL WP2 camera is competitive and capable of keeping up with any situation.

The camera application and its possibilities

In the camera application we have been able to find fewer configurations than expected. We will not say that it is an incomplete application, because has everything we could need. But the options it offers are too basic. You can select the type of 20 or 40 burst shooting shots per second.

We can also choose the photo size selecting the maximum pixels of resolution. Or select from the different modes of photo it offers. Among them we find, in addition to video, facial beauty, the famous blur effect (here called "Blur"), black and white, or panoramic.

And we can also select between eight different filters that we can apply to the camera before even shooting. We can see how the photo would look before taking it. Options are not lacking, but as we say, access to the configuration is somewhat incomplete.

We cannot ignore in the photography section the powerful 4-LED flash with which the WP2 has. The call super power led flashlight it is the most powerful flash you can find in a smartphone. It will give light to your photos even in situations of complete darkness. What's more, doubles as a powerful flashlight that we can use even if the battery level is less than 5%. Such is its power that its manufacturer advises not to aim it directly at the eyes.

Battery to give and take

The battery is one of OUKITE's hallmarksL. Known among many other brands for providing its devices with generous batteries that offer great autonomy. And the OUKITEL WP2 is by no means an exception. We are facing a huge 10.000 mAh battery. A load that even triples that offered by other devices.

It is good to know that in addition to having such capacity, has fast charging technology, so we can enjoy the 100% battery life in just over two hours. And seeing the figures offered by the manufacturer, it becomes an important option for those looking for a smartphone capable of following a demanding pace.

OUKITEL claims that the WP2's battery is capable of holding up to 42 days standby. It also supports 50 hours of phone use. Until 15 hours of video playback without interruptions. OR 66 hours playing music non-stop. Without a doubt something that for other devices could seem like science fiction. It seems that we can enjoy a weekend outdoors without having to worry about the charger.
One of the small drawbacks that we always put to this type of device is in the Difficulty removing the tab that protects the connector loading. It is understood that it is there to do the important job of keeping it watertight. But it is inconvenient to have to remove it every time we have to charge or connect it. The ideal would be wireless charging and of course, a wireless charger too.

Sound and extras

In the sound section, the OUKITEL WP2 goes a bit on tiptoe. At least in terms of power and exterior sound. It has a single speaker which is located at the rear. A location that does not seem the most appropriate to us. With the phone resting on the table the sound is a bit muddy, and if we have it in our hand watching a video it is easy for it to be completely covered.

As for the sound quality and power It meets minimum standards so we can not fault it. We really like to see that OUKITEL have opted to add a FM radio receiver. But in the same way we have to give a slap on the ears because we do not have the necessary headphones to act as an antenna.

It is also noteworthy, as we commented at the beginning, the 3.5 mm jack input suppression. Although we can connect any headset thanks to an adapter that is included compatible with the USB Type C port. We can forget about listening to music while the phone is charging. It seems that manufacturers increasingly "force" us to have bluetooth headphones. Even more so when we use this type of phone with protections and covers on their ports.

Extras that add up

Although we have mentioned some small drawbacks in the sound section, thanks to some extras that the OUKITEL WP2 has, these are compensated. One of the important technologies with which it is equipped the WP2 is NFC connectivity. Something that, although it is not new, many manufacturers are reluctant to incorporate. And having it makes the device much more complete and versatile.

Of course, we cannot ignore that although we are facing a “ruged phone”, it has IP68 certification. Not all manufacturers of rugged smartphones dare to have the words “submersible H2O”. A declaration of intent is based on a guaranteed resistance to immersion in water up to one and a half meters. In addition to resisting dust and shocks. Without a doubt an important extra that makes us forget other small deficiencies.

The "pros" and "cons" of the OUKITEL WP2

It is time for us to talk about the ones we liked the most, and those aspects in which, in our opinion, there is room for improvement. We must say in favor of WP2 that it is a balanced smartphone. Since it compensates for possible shortcomings or weaknesses with other strengths. Therefore, in general the opinion is positive, but as always, room for improvement in some parts.

The pros

La iP68 certification It is something that we hope to see in an all-terrain smartphone, although we have seen that not all have it.

Of course the huge 10.000 mA batteryh with which it counts. A figure that makes the OUKITEL WP2 the ruggedized phone with the largest battery on the market. Point in favor for OUKITEL.

La NFC connectivity, something that for many goes unnoticed, for others it is an essential quality, depending on the utilities that we can give to the phone. And having it adds positive aspects in terms of versatility.

The cons

El high weight and large size It seems that they are implicit in these types of phones, although we have seen much less voluminous bets. Although the physical aspect does not count so much in this sector of the market, it is not good to leave it aside.

La 3.5mm mini jack port removal even today it seems like a failure. Something that would become insignificant when a manufacturer dares to compensate by adding wireless headphones. 

El fingerprint readers we did not like it for two reasons. We start by talking about a totally wrong location. But the negative points are more when we have verified a poor functionality. Really get it right a few times with a correct reading. Very improvable appearance.
