How to switch to Android from iOS by Eric Schmidt

Eric

Eric Schmidt, who was president and CEO of Google from 2001 until April 4, 2011, has released a guide on his Google+ for switching from iOS to Android in several steps, which we will show you below.

With Christmas just around the corner, and given this excellent guide proposed by Eric Schmidt, why not give an iPhone user a brand-new Android phone as a Christmas present ? Android boasts a better screen, is faster, and has a more intuitive interface. This is precisely what Eric Schmidt is suggesting on Google+, and he's even created a fantastic guide to help.

On his Google+ page, he mentions how most of his iPhone-owning friends are switching to Android with the Samsung Galaxy S4 or the Nexus 5, which have better screens, are faster, and have a more polished interface. Eric says, " A great Christmas present for an iPhone user! "

And then, to create a guide that we show below, which will surely cause quite a stir at Apple headquarters .

First: set up your Android phone

  1. Turn it on, connect it to WiFi, log in with your personal Gmail account and download from the Google Play Store all the applications you normally use (Instagram for example)
  2. Confirm that your phone's software Android is up to date version 4.3 or 4.4. A notification should appear if there is a software update.
  3. It can be configured additional accounts Gmail now or later.

At this point, you should be able to see your Gmail and use some of the applications , which should be working properly. Double-check this anyway.

Second: update your iPhone or iPad

  1. Turn it on, connect it to the WiFi connection, make sure your Gmail is logged in and update all software from your iPhone phone to the latest version (possibly iOS 7+)
  2. Check that you are using iCloud to save a copy of your contacts. Go to iCloud (in Settings) and turn it on for contacts. If iCloud is not used, go direct and create a session for it (the use of iCloud is required for Mac users if you want to transfer the contacts)
  3. In your personal Gmail account, go to Settings / Mail, activate contact sync. In the latest version of iOS, it should sync your Gmail and iPhone contacts.
  4. In Settings / Messages, disable iMessageSo the messenger is an iPhone-toiPhone messenger, and if it is in the texts of your iPhone friends, it will not do it to Android. Your iPhone will still use SMS messages to reach your friends if you use the iPhone after this change.
  5. Check that your iPhone is fully synced to Mac iTunes. Your photos and music should all be saved on your Mac when this step is done. Go check it out on the Mac and iPhone.

At this point, you should see all your Gmail , apps, and contacts on your Android phone. If your contacts aren't on your Android, download them manually on your Mac as shown below:

  1. Go to apple.com/icloud, log in with your ID Apple and click on Contacts.
  2. In the bottom left, click on the wheel, and "select all contacts" and "Export" the vCard inside the vCard file (in downloads)
  3. In a browser, go to gmail.com, click the Mail button and select "Contacts." You should see a list of your Gmail contacts. Import the vCard file into Gmail / contacts using the "Import contacts" command and it should manually add the contacts. Delete any duplicates or use the function «More / Find & match duplicates».

You'll now have Gmail, your apps, and contacts on your new phone . You also need to verify the following:

Third: On your Mac, connect your music to Google

Download Google Music Manager on your Mac and launch it . Music Manager will upload your iTunes music to the cloud. The standard version is free and supports most iTunes libraries. You'll need to sign in to Google Wallet and provide your credit card information, but it's free. You can see that the music is in your personal Gmail account. See:

At this point, you should have transferred your Gmail, apps, contacts, and music . Double-check this on your Android phone.

Fourth: remove the SIM from the iPhone and insert it into Android

I won't repeat something that seems almost sacred, and the conversion would practically be complete, but I'll say it again: remove the SIM card from the iPhone and insert it into the Android device . You might need an adapter (from nano-SIM to micro-SIM). Then restart your Android device, and you'll be all set.

Finally, if you have photos on your iPhone, back them up to your Mac and then sync your iPhone with iTunes. You can also use Dropbox. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083

New photos taken on your Android device will automatically be uploaded to your Gmail account , so you don't need to do anything. If older photos are important, send them to Gmail and download them to your Android phone.

Other tips Eric gives in this amazing tutorial for switching from iPhone to Android include using the Chrome browser instead of Safari , as it's much more secure and completely free. Finally, he advises you to enable two-step verification for your Gmail account.

This is a great guide that's sure to generate a lot of buzz in the coming days, and we can just imagine the reaction of some Apple executives, like Tim Cook, when he reads it. It's very clear that this isn't the end of it.
