Google has never been known for maintaining apps or services over time, despite being one of the best options on the market (as was the case with Google Reader at one time). Currently, Google offers two platforms for video calls: Google Meet and Google Duo.
Google Duo was launched to replace Google Allo and was initially conceived as a calling service. Google Meet is Google's main video calling application/service. However, the two services are becoming increasingly similar , with the exception of the number of participants each platform allows. A new report claims they could merge.
According to 9to5Google, citing sources familiar with the matter, Google Duo is set to be replaced by Google Meet . The continued rise in popularity of video calling applications like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Meet is said to be the reason Google is considering the merger, aiming to focus all its efforts on a single platform and avoid confusing users, as many believe Duo is for personal users and Meet for businesses.
It's worth remembering that a few weeks ago, Google added the Meet tab to the Gmail mobile app, so it makes much more sense that the two platforms will soon be integrated. Let's hope they don't change the name again, although knowing Google, that would be surprising.
Google Duo works almost exactly like Google Meet , allowing users to join video calls via a link and increasing the number of participants from 8 to 32. If Google plans to merge both services, they shouldn't take long to do so, especially now that the start of the school year is approaching—a school year that many schools still don't know how it will unfold.
