If you have come this far, looking for an answer to create new labels from the mobile application, then I am sorry to disappoint you, the truth is that cannot create new tags from here. The creation of labels is an exclusive process of the web browser, being able to only change labels in the app, but those that already exist.
Process to change label from the app
Despite that we will focus directly on the Android application, the way is very similar in iOS. I will tell you what is the method to change a label from the Gmail application on your mobile.
- Log in regularly to your app. It is practically impossible for the session not to be started, as it is part of the mobile configuration process.
- In case you have multiple email accounts set up, choose which one you want to search and change labels.
- When entering your list of received emails, you must select and enter the one you want to make the change. It does not matter if this is old or even has been opened before.
- You must access the option “More”, defined by three vertically aligned points. These are located in the upper corner of the screen.
- Here, it is necessary to select the option “change labels".

After the disappointment of not being able to create new tags from the mobile app, I will show you step by step the process from the web browser. Before starting, it is important that visually your Gmail account may look somewhat different, depending on the configuration you have.
These are the steps you must follow to create a new label or if you prefer to call it, folder:
- Access your account from your browser gmail, for this you must know your credentials.
- When you can see your mailing list, you must access the left side menu. In my case, this version requires me to click on the three horizontal lines that are displayed in the left corner of the screen.
- At the end of the option “Categories”, you will find the word “More”, which will display new options. All this is executed without leaving the initial window.
- Among the last options, “New label” will appear, an element where we will click.
- A popup window will not indicate what the name of my new tag will be and where the root directory where I want to host it will be located. In this case the name will be “Androidsis” and I'll nest it in an old tag called work, which I created years ago.
- At the end, we will click on the button “Create".
- Immediately, a message will appear in the lower left corner of the screen, indicating that the label was created successfully.

This process is very similar to what we did from the mobile application, however, to avoid doubts, we will do it step by step:
- Once inside Gmail in your web browser.
- Without opening the email you want to change, but having displayed the list of labels, we must make a single movement.
- Click and hold, dragging the message directly to the label you want. When you get to it, release the mouse button.
With this procedure, you can choose to change from one label to another, but it won't let you have the message in two tags. If you want this duality, we can do the following:
- Navigate to the message to which you want to add more than one tag.
- On the top ribbon, you will find the label symbol, where we will click.
- Here we will display a list with all the labels that we have available, where to be in more than one, we simply mark it in the box that appears to the left of each one.
- Your changes will be saved automatically, you just need to click elsewhere on the screen for the option to disappear.
