With a few minutes of configuration, you can get everything just the way you want.
In this practical guide we review, step by step, all the routes you need within Instagram to decide who can reply, comment, share, or write to you after viewing your Stories. Before you start: Where are the settings you're interested in?
Almost everything you'll configure lives within the Profile Settings & Activity menu.. Go to your profile, tap the three-line icon in the upper right corner, and access Settings and Activity. There you'll see several sections we'll use throughout the guide: Who can see your content, How others can interact with you, and What you see.

- Go to your profile and tap the three lines to open the options.
- Go to the section How others can interact with you.
- Open Messages and replies to stories.
- Go to Story Responses.

Practical tipIf you're noticing a lot of unwanted replies, start by trying allowing replies only from people you follow. It's a reasonable balance between interaction and control.
Comments on Stories: How to Block or Restrict Them
Instagram has introduced the ability to comment on stories, a feature you may not see on all accounts yet.If you have it available, you can decide whether anyone can comment, only your contacts, or no one can. This is different from replies via message: these are comments that Instagram is enabling on Stories.
- Open Instagram and access Settings from the profile menu.
- Look for the Comments section.
In the comments section on stories you will see three settings: Anyone, only your contacts, or no one. If you select no one, no one will be able to comment on the stories you upload. If you select only your contacts, only people you follow will be able to comment on your stories.
Please note that this feature is still being rolled out.If you don't see it, update the app to the latest version and check back later. In the meantime, you can continue to control story replies from Messages and Story Replies as we've seen.
additional advantageYou don't need third-party apps for this. Instagram's native options are enough to restrict or disable comments on stories.
Limit interactions to reduce noise and harassment

- Go to your profile and open the three lines.
- Go to How others can interact with you.
- Tap Limit Interactions.
From here you can choose who to limitYou have options like limiting everyone except your best friends, recent followers, or accounts that don't follow you. This reduces exposure to unwanted comments and replies, especially during peak visibility periods.
Use this option as a firewall when you anticipate a lot of activity on your stories, for example, during events or posts that go viral.

Tags and mentions can attract replies and messages to your stories.Managing them helps you prevent third parties from triggering interactions you don't want.
- Open Settings and Activity from your profile.
- Go to How others can interact with you.
- Tap Tags & Mentions.
Under Who can tag you, choose between three levels: Allow tags from everyone, only from people you follow, or don't allow tags. Select the level you feel comfortable with to maintain control.

With mentions you can also decide Whether to allow mentions from everyone, only from people you follow, or not at all. It's an effective way to reduce notifications and unwanted contacts linked to your stories.
Share and reuse: decide what others can share
In addition to replying or commenting, many interactions come when others share your content. You can control these options to limit the sharing of your posts and stories.
- Go to Settings and Activity from your profile.
- Open How others can interact with you.
- Tap Share & Reuse.
Here you can enable or disable various sharing capabilities., including allowing others to share your posts and Reels to Stories, allowing others to share your Stories in Messages, and allowing notes on posts and Reels. Adjust each toggle to suit your comfort level.

- Open your profile menu and go to How others can interact with you.
- Go to Messages and Story Replies.
- Go to Who can see that you're online.
Turn Show Activity Status on or off as desired. If you turn it off, people you follow won't see your online status or last activity time, which often reduces the pressure to respond immediately.
Message requests: filter who can write to you
Many replies to stories come in as direct messages. The message request inbox allows you to channel those contacts and decide who can reach you through that channel.
- From your profile, go to Settings and Activity.
- Open How others can interact with you.
- Go to Messages & Story Replies and select Message Requests.
Configure how your followers and others can contact youYou can adjust behavior by group, for example, for your Instagram followers and for other people on Instagram, differentiating the destination of those messages.
You can also decide who can send you message requests.Options include everyone, only your followers, or no one. If you choose no one, you'll essentially be closing the door to unwanted contacts after viewing your stories.
Remember that message requests work as a filter: Messages that don't go to your main inbox stay in requests until you accept, delete, or ignore them.
Make your account private if you want a closer circle.
A powerful way to reduce responses and comments from strangers is to make your account private. That way, only people you approve can see your photos, videos, and stories.
- Go to your profile and open the three lines.
- Go to Who can see your content.
- Go to Account Privacy and turn on Private Account.
When activating the private account, follow requests must be approved. This pre-screening severely limits responses to your stories because only those you've approved will see them.
Who to connect with: mute, restrict, or block
Sometimes it is not enough to adjust general options, and it is necessary to act on specific accounts.Instagram offers three powerful tools: mute, restrict, and block.
- From Settings and Activity, go to What You See to manage Muted Accounts and reactivate muted accounts.
- Go to Who can see your content to review Blocked People and, if necessary, unblock someone.
- Open How others can interact with you and go to Restricted to protect yourself from unwanted interactions without unfollowing or blocking.
Mute reduces noise without notifying the other personRestricting discreetly limits how people can interact with you, and blocking completely cuts off contact and visibility. Choose the appropriate measure for each case.
When to use each setting to control responses to your stories
If your goal is to make sure no one can reply or comment on your stories, combines two settings: under Story Replies, choose not to allow replies, and if you have the Story Comments feature, select no one under Comments. This is the most direct way to shut down the interaction.
If you want interaction only with people close to youUse the Allow replies only from people you follow option, and select only your contacts for Story comments. Upgrade to a private account if you're looking for even more control.
If you receive annoying responses from new or unknown accounts, turn on Limit interactions for recent followers or accounts that don't follow you. Additionally, in message requests, restrict who can send requests to your followers or directly to anyone.
If you are concerned about the call effect of tags and mentions, reduce or deactivate tags for people you follow, enable manual approval, and limit mentions. This lowers the volume of notifications and prevents third parties from dragging you into unwanted conversations.
Notes on availability and operation of comments in stories
The option to comment on stories is being rolled out gradually., so it's possible it doesn't appear yet. If so, update the app to the latest version and check again later.
Comments on stories follow the ephemeral nature of the stories themselves., so they disappear when the story disappears. If you prefer to maintain the traditional interaction channel, you can rely solely on message replies and disable comments when they become available.
Good practices to maintain control with minimal effort
Check your settings from time to time, especially after app updates, as Instagram frequently introduces improvements and new features.
Before sensitive or highly exposed content, prepare the ground: limit interactions, restrict replies, and disable sharing if you don't want it to spread too much.
Use security tools proactively: Manual label approval, limit interactions to specific periods, and disable activity status if you need peace of mind.
Remember that you can combine all these layersThe power of control lies in using multiple levers at once: replies to stories, comments, message requests, tags, and sharing.
