Google insists on improving the android security and that's why it has started to implement a new feature called Anti-Theft Protection. Android's new anti-theft feature incorporates two settings, which we will go into in depth in this post, that are designed to protect both the device and personal data that it contains. Let's understand a little more about what this new tool is about and how you can activate it to secure your mobile.
What is Android Anti-Theft Feature?
Android's "Theft Protection" aims to minimize the risk of personal data being compromised if the device is stolen. This feature Blocks access to the device when it detects that it has been stolen, it also protects the information stored on the device even if it is not connected to the Internet. As we mentioned in the introduction to this post, the function has two components. Let's detail how they work:
- Lock due to theft detection: This setting is automatically activated when the system detects suspicious activity that indicates that the device might have been stolen. When this happens, the phone is immediately locked, and the lock screen will not allow access to the data stored on the phone. The idea is that even if someone tries to access the device, they will not be able to obtain any sensitive information.
- Offline device lock: This option protects the data stored on the device in case it is disconnected from the Internet. Usually, when a mobile phone is stolen, thieves turn off the device or disable mobile data to avoid being tracked. Thanks to this feature, all the information stored on the device remains inaccessible, even if the thief tries to manipulate the phone while it is offline.
How to activate the new feature?
The new Theft Protection feature is in its early stages of integration into Android devices. Therefore, it is not yet available in all markets or on all phone models. We also do not know when it will reach all users. When it is available to everyone, we will be able to activate it on our phone. Remember these steps to activate the anti-theft function to apply them to your Android when the time comes.
This new anti-theft feature could be included in an operating system update. So, what we advise is to check if there is an update available. To do this, go to Configuration > System > System updates.
Now that you have the latest Android version, go to Settings > Security. Within the security menu, look for the “Theft protection” option. In this section you will find the two settings we mentioned: Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock. Turn on both settings to 100% protect your device.
Lastly, accept the permissions. Remember to read and understand each permission request before accepting it.
